Golf Course Overview: Brown County Golf Course

Insights From An Insider With Jim Ostrowski, PGA Golf Professional

By Brian Weis

Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with Jim Ostrowski who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.

How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
We have the finest layout and conditions in Northeast Wisconsin. Our classic design features doglegs, rolling hills and tree lined fairways that run past nearby Duck Creek in a beautiful peaceful setting.
Built in 1957 and designed by Lawrence Packard.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
We re-built all our greens and surrounds 4 years ago and last year we added new Gold Tee locations on all our holes. Considerable tree work done to let more air and sunshine in!

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
Numbers 11, 12 and 13 constitute our toughest stretch with #13 being our most talked about hole due to the tight tee shot and two ponds guarding the sloped green. These holes are best played with a left to right tee shot which also needs to be accurate. Enough slope on these greens to make the best putter in your group work to maintain a two putt on each.

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
We have been consistently rated as one of the top Public courses in the nation, most recently as the 9th rated Municipal course in the nation by Golf Digest. We are the finest golf course in the Northeast Wisconsin area.

What tournaments/events have you (recently) hosted or will be hosting?
We have hosted numerous State tournaments including the 2005 State Amateur Championship and more recently, the WSGA Two Man Best Ball Tournament in 2016 and 2017. We also host an annual WSGA Junior Tournament as well. The Brown County Amateur has been held year every since 1975.

Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
We have a great clubhouse with an up to date full service restaurant fit to handle outings of all sizes, up to 200 players+. We offer a practice range as well as three putting greens and one practice chipping green.

For the traveling golfer, do you have lodging onsite or partner with any area hotels?
We have many hotels within a 15 mile radius including the Radisson Hotel and Casino five minutes away

Signature sandwich or drink?
We offer hand cut steaks and a fantastic hand pattied hamburger made fresh to order. Order anything from our full service bar!

All of his life, Brian has been around the game of golf. As a youngster, Brian competed at all levels in junior and high school golf. Brian had a zero chance for a college golf scholarship, so he worked on the grounds crew at West Bend Country Club to pay for his University of Wisconsin education. In his adult years, his passion for the game collided with his entrepreneurial spirit and in 2004 launched GolfWisconsin.com. In 2007, the idea for a network of local golf directory sites formed and GolfTrips.com was born. Today, the network consists of a site in all 50 states supported by national sites like GolfTrips.com, GolfGuide.com and GolfPackages.com. It is an understatement to say, Brian is passionate about promoting golf and golf travel on a local, regional, national and international level.

On the golf course, Brian is known as a fierce weekend warrior that fluctuates between a 5-9 handicap. With a soft fade, known as "The Weis Slice", and booming 300+ drives, he can blast it out of bounds with the best of them.
